Hmm...  On my box (Red Hat 8.0, kernel 2.4.18-17.8.0), with eth0
already configured:

osiris:~# ifconfig eth0:0 192.168.0.200
osiris:~# ifconfig eth0:0              
eth0:0    Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:A0:CC:3D:DC:D6  
          inet addr:192.168.0.200  Bcast:192.168.0.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          Interrupt:11 Base address:0x3f00 

Seems to work.
