dumb question

Okay, I know this is dumb, but I noticed some interesting behavior from
bash:

squishy /home/koree > +
~ ~
squishy /home/koree > +
~ ~ ~
squishy /home/koree > +
~ ~ ~ ~
squishy /home/koree > +
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
squishy /home/koree > +
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
squishy /home/koree > +
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
squishy /home/koree > +
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
squishy /home/koree > +
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
squishy /home/koree > +
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
squishy /home/koree > +
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~


I'm sure "+" has some sort of significance to bash, but why does it count
up tildes like that?
