Thanks to everyone who responded.  It's easier than I thought it would be.

For those of you playing at home ... the reason that I need this is that my
digital camera stores its filenames in upper cases.  It's easy to connect to my
box via USB (it shows up in /mnt/camera), but those darn upper case filenames
were annoying me.  8-)
