hrm, weird gigabit issue

so i am pieceing together a security box for the gigabit network down in
the hole and i get everything going fine and dandy and i start the machine
up.  now this is with just a fresh install nothing has even been touched
yet, and the gigabit card stops working after connecting to another
machine on the network to download a tarball.  i think "weird" ok, so i go
about my buisness and get everything configured again.  now after the
reboot the gigabit works for about 1.5 minutes and then stops working
again.  i was using the stock kernel, but now i got a recompile running
and i am just curious to see if anyone else has run into this problem
before.
