Re: recompiling kernels in Red Hat 7.2
Because my friend Dan was having problems, I decided to recompile the
kernel myself. Now, if I really wanted to use the kernel, I would have
upgraded to a slightly newer version. However, since it was just to
prove that it worked, I used the Kernel headers and kernel source that
came on the Red Hat 7.2 machine. I used a machine that had just had a
fresh install of Red Hat 7.2 with no updates yet (and is not in the net,
in case you are wondering...)
Anyway, I used "make oldconfig" to select the same options as the
current kernel. Then I sucessfully compiled and installed the new
kernel... well, once I removed that typo that I put in /etc/grub.conf...
:)
It all worked well. I think Dan's problem was that he selected the
wrong processor-type for his machine. As he claims that he did a make
oldconfig and then went in and just changed the processor type and still
had the init problem.
So, in the end, I guess its PEBCAK.

What kernel, and what *exactly* happened?
