ssh host keys

I have openssh working now, both as a client
and as a server. The first time that I
connect to another server, I get a host
key in the form xx:xx:xx:...:xx However,
when I am at that host and look up the
same host key in its file, it is in the
form 1024 xx xxxxxxxxx...xxxxxxxxxxx,
a different format. How do I know that
it represents the same host key?

I have tried "ssh localhost", but that only
works the first time. I have tried the -v
switch, but it also only works the first
time. (The problem is that on the server
I am connecting to, I am not the one doing
it the first time.)
