NIS or LDAP userid/password server?

I have more than one Linux machine at home.  Lucky me.

I'd really like to avoid having to set up userid's and passwords each time I
reload a machine.  I have one machine that rarely gets rebuilt.

So... would it be hard to set up that machine as an NIS or LDAP server and just
instruct the other machines to look to it to validate logins?

I looked at the "NIS Howto", but got hopelessly lost.
