expect and pty limit

I am using an expect script and am running into pty,
pseudo-tty, limits.  I guess I could just raise the pty
limit, but does anybody know what ptys are and why there's
limits and if there's a better way to handle this?

In Sun, I guess the limits are set in /etc/system.  Does
anyone know where they are set in Linux?
