Problem compiling gtk+ 1.2.9

Hello,

Hopefully someone can help me solve my problem. I am trying to compile
gnome 1.4 rc1 and I'm having trouble compiling some programs, most noteably
gtk+ 1.2.9. I am not a programmer so I don't know what this message means.
Whenever I've compiled programs before I've never got had an error like
this. I've been on Gnome's website and looked through some of the
documentation but there isn't any specific to 1.4. Here's the error
message.

/tmp/cccWRNXe.s: Assembler messages:
/tmp/cccWRNXe.s:1336: Error: no such 386 instruction: `filds'
/tmp/cccWRNXe.s:1342: Error: no such 386 instruction: `filds'
make[2]: *** [gdkinput.lo] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/gnome-1.4rc1/gtk+-1.2.9/gdk'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/gnome-1.4rc1/gtk+-1.2.9'
make: *** [all-recursive-am] Error 2

What type of error is this? Is it a bug? I have had this "assembler
messages" error on a couple different tarballs that go with gnome.

TIA
Jason
