Network problem

I have a box, running Mandrake 7.2, kernel 2.4.0. It's a Dell PentiumII
400Mhz, 128MB Ram, 4GB Hard drive, & 3com 905B NIC. For some reason,
connections to the machine via SSH (telnet also tested) will work most
of the time, but after a random amount of time, the server kicks the
user off. I have tried another NIC, a Kingston PCI NE2000 compatible
with the same results. Also, this "feature" was occuring before the
installation of the 2.4.0 kernel (previously using the stock 2.2.17
Mandrake 7.2 kernel). A packet sniffer was used to determine that it
was the server cutting the connection off and not the client. Has
anybody had any situations similar to this or know of a possible
solution?

Jim
