Perfect! I ended up putting "vga=ask" which works nicely. You press <return>
(when prompted) during the boot process and it shows you all the modes you can
have.
I am now running at 80 x 50.

Just ran accross this in browsing thru "Linux for Your Laptop" by Bill Ball.
Per page 230, check out LILO's documentation, User_Guide.ps, found under
the /usr/doc/lilo directory, the vga= kernel message has several options:
o normal. Uses normal VGA text mode
o extended. Attempts to use 80x50 text mode.
o ask. Just before booting, prompts for a number, corresponding to a
displayed text mode.
