SILUG: Springfield, IL Computerfest - March 13

I hope some of you can make the trip up for this...

----

The 12th Annual Springfield Computerfest is Saturday, March 13, 1999
from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm in the Illinois Building at the Illinois State
Fairgrounds in Springfield.

There will be a ton of stuff of interest to Linux users at the show.
Representatives of the Linux Users of Central Illinois, the
Springfield Perl Mongers, the Southern Illinois Linux Users Group, and
the local Unix users group will be on hand. Some of the stuff going
on in our booths includes the following (in no particular order):

    * Peter Salus, author of _A Quarter Century of Unix_ and _Casting
the Net_, will be giving his presentation on the last thirty
years of Unix and the Internet. (This is the same presentation
he gave at the dinner at the Atlanta Linux Showcase, for those
of you who missed it there or want to see it again.)
    * The Unix group will be giving away Jolt Cola, and will be
displaying a Sun Ultra 5 workstation on loan from Sun
Microsystems (running either Linux or Solaris, depending on what
      mood everybody is in ;).
    * LUCI will be displaying a Corel^H^H^H^H^H^H HCC Netwinder, a
couple of Alphas, a SPARC or two, and anything else interesting
we can dig up (all running Linux, of course).
    * The groups will demonstrate a cluster of Linux systems, in this
case doing distributed POVray over PVM. The cluster will
consist of Pentiums and K6s of various varieties and speeds,
plus one Really Fast Alpha. It should be interesting. :-)
    * A Caldera rep will be on hand in the SILUG booth to answer
questions, and will undoubtedly be giving stuff away.
    * LUCI and SILUG will be handing out Linux CDs, copies of Linux
Journal, and we're not sure what all else.
    * The Springfield Perl Mongers will be displaying Perl books from
O'Reilly and Associates and answering Perl questions.

Other things going on at the show include presentations by author Ed
Krol, Netscape representative Kim Wilson, and some guy from M$ (who
must be heckled ;); a job fair made up of local technical recruiters
and employers; and a raffle for an iMac by Club Mac.

Admission is $5 for adults, $1 for children under 12. Regular
admission gets you into the entire show floor and lets you see all of
the speakers. All procedes from the show go to local schools and
charities, and to fund next year's show, of course. :-)

Computerfest, Inc. is a non-profit organization made up of
