Make dep problem

Hello

I am trying to compile kernel 2.2.18. I've read the HOWTO and the README.
But after I do a 'make mrproper' then 'make config' I then run 'make dep'
and I get this error:

gcc -Wall-Wstrict-prototypes -02 - fomit-frame-pointer -o scripts/mkdep
scripts/mkdep.c
make:gcc: Command not found
make *** [scripts/mkdep] error 127

I kind of understand where all of these messages are coming from.  In
/usr/src/linux/scripts/ there is a mkdep.c but not a mkdep.


Any help is much appreciated.
