sendmail question

I use Mandrake 7.2 (kernel 2.2.17) and currently cannot use sendmail
without being root. If I attempt to mail a message as a regular user, I
get the message:

Can't create transcript file ./xff05HeKP07949: Permission denied

I am trying to send the message from a directory that is writable by the
normal user. Also, it doesn't seem to make any difference if I chmod
4555 /usr/sbin/sendmail.. Again, if I am root, I do not see this
message, and it works just fine. Any idea what directory it's trying to
create the transcript file? Other ideas to get it working again? Thanx
in advance..

Jim
