Howto pointers?

A while back someone mentioned they got their soundblaster to work by
avoiding the HOWTO.  can't remember who it was, just that a quote was,
"the HOWTO was horrible".. and indeed it is.  is there a way to install
support for my AWE 32 w/o buying a module from that what's-it's company?

also, what's the best libc5 to glibc2 upgrade howto out there?  there's
got to a better/more-up-to-date HOWTO than the LDP's.
