Mike:

When someone attempted to take the "Linux" trademark, the big lawyers
took over (Red Hat and others supported this effort). This was a very
recent battle. If you look at the bottom of the MotLUG web page
(http://www.cig.mot.com/motlug), you will see "Linux is a trademark of
Linus Torvalds". I do believe in the interim of this battle, keeping
Linux freeware was an area that was looked into, as well. I am quite
sure, well most believe, that the disclaimer written into Linux
prevents any takeover action and that it is solid. This operating
system can not be taken over by any corporation.

Not even Linus Torvald's has the right to sell the Linux kernel. It
is public domain forever. Therefore, the other distributers of Linux
will most likely enjoy the benefits of this deal Red Hat has acquired,
as well. More linux people will make more business all around. This
should make everyone happy.

I believe the current new effort by Red Hat is to create a "Linux
Support" engine for replacing Windows NT in the corporate world. One
of the most damaging problems with Linux has been the "lack" of
professional support. This is what Intel Corp. (INTC - news),
Netscape Communications Corp. (NSCP - news) and two venture capital
firms Tuesday are supporting. In my opinion, this is a very wise
strategic move on their part. Microsoft's quality has got to make
Intel look bad with it's easy access to the infamous "blue screen of
death". Yep, this should be a very good thing. Microsoft is losing
control, slowly and surely. I can feel their pain... :)
