I dunno about overboard.  I did the above on a new WinXP-home machine 
with a 40 GB drive.  Imaging and gzip'ing resulted in a 1.4 GB file.  A 
bit big for a CD, but small enough for a DVD.  And its a nice safety 
net which gives you a bit more piece of mind when you experiment with 
those repartitioning programs.
