Tim,

You definately do NOT want to start with a distro - that would be a 
terrible wast of time removing all the stuff you don't need! Check out the 
many resources for Embedded Linux, .. there's one group actually here in 
Carbondale that I have been looking at - EMAC www.emacinc.com. Check out 
their SBCs and LInux Starter Kit.
