Are you using a non-RH kernel, or a Fedora kernel on RH9?  I've seen
cases where RH9's rpm (db4 actually, I think) isn't happy on newer
NPTL kernels.  Specifically, I had trouble when I installed the FC1
kernel on RH9 without upgrading anything else.

If that's what is going on, I'd suggest rebooting into a RH9 kernel,
doing a "rpm --rebuilddb", and then upgrading everything (or just
sticking with a RH9 kernel).
