The way printing tends to work on Linux goes something like this:

  * The application generates postscript.
  * The application pipes the postscript to an external program (lpr).
  * Cups or lpd converts the postscript into something the printer can
    accept natively.  (This is why Postscript printers are nice.  :)
  * Cups/lpd sends the data to the printer (or the next print queue).

The third step is where things are going wrong for you for some
reason.

That's an old enough printer that it should Just Work.  Try adjusting
some options in whatever GUI printer configuration utility you have
there.  (On Red Hat, I'd probably toggle the "re-render postscript"
option.)
