Problems ripping CDs with Grip

Grip version 3.1.1 is being used - permissions are 777.
Ripping executable is cdparanoia - permissions are 777.
Encoding executable is lame - permissions are 777.

Root's and user's settings are identical.
Root can play and rip cds.
User can play CDs but can NOT rip CDs.

When user attempts to rip CDs, ~/mp3 and subdirectories are created. 
But... CD does not spin up and subdirectories are not populated.
No error messages are generated. 

Suggestions, please, as to why user cannot rip CDs!
