Me too. I got a weird "Too many concurrent mounts. Please stop." message
one time. System load was OK, so I tried again later and everything was 
just fine. Go figure.

Steve - that's well and good - *as long as you are root*.
Since us regular folks can't use mount, symlinks are the poor man's mount.

Could you expand on some downsides you see to hundreds of mounts (and
combined with or without lots of symlinks) on a system?

e.g. the "twisty maze of passages" of symlinks like are found on Solaris?
