Weird.  Well, I'd probably start moving more dot files out of the way,
especially .g*.

Try creating a new user and see if that user's desktop is screwed up
too.  If not, then removing GNOME and reinstalling isn't going to help
one bit.  The problem is almost certainly in your home directory.

If the new user works and you really want to get crazy, you could try
moving your whole home directory out of the way, creating a new one,
starting up GNOME, shutting it down, then using the dot files in the
new home directory to replace the ones in your old one.
