Yeah, it's definitely not a good thing.  Not being able to debug the
problem with strace or ltrace just made it worse.

I am going to avoid making changes on my laptop until these problems
are fixed.  In the mean time, I think I'm going to try it on one more
system, a server where I can test LVM.
