Did you try the command under root?  Did you try running the command while an X 
session was up?  These two questions might point towards your 'unable to open 
display' solution...

  reindln@dingoblue:~ > tty
  /dev/tty0  # I'm in a console here
  reindln@dingoblue:~ > startx

  reindln@dingoblue:~ > tty
  /dev/pts/4  # I'm in an xterm here
  reindln@dingoblue:~ > su -
  root's password:
  dingoblue:~# xhost +localhost  # Just for an example
