Well, sounds like there is no root file system to me.  I could be wrong,
but if you can't find init, you've got problems.  

I would get some sort of rescue disk or a CCLinux disk built (CCLinux
requires a working Linux install), boot from floppy and see if you can
mount the HD.  If the HD mounts, take a look to see if there is anything
left. 

At least it makes the drive up I57 more interesting.  I can look over and
know that they do, in fact, run linux :)
